Pre-1965 Franklin Half Dollars

The United States Mint produced the Franklin half dollar from 1948 until 1963, and it is an important part of the history of American coinage. This silver coin, named for Benjamin Franklin, one of the Founding Fathers, combines artistic design with historical relevance. These silver coins are legal tender with a face value of $0.50 (fifty cents USD), but their 90% silver content increases their melt value significantly. These $5 face value (10 silver coins), $500 face value (1,000 silver coins), $2000 face value (4,000 silver coins), and $5000 face value (10,000 silver coins) quantities of U.S. Mint silver half-dollars are available for purchase.

Coin Highlights

  • Design and Symbolism: The Liberty Bell, which stands for freedom and independence, is featured on the reverse, while the obverse pays tribute to Benjamin Franklin, one of America's founding fathers.
  • Composition: With 0.715 ounces of silver in every dollar of face value, these coins, which are 90% silver and 10% copper, have a substantial bullion value.
  • Production and Mint Marks: Coins from the Philadelphia, Denver, and San Francisco mints were struck; the coins from the Denver and San Francisco mints had mint marks (mintmarks) located above the Liberty Bell. Coins from the Philadelphia Mint were produced without mint markings.
  • Important Dates and Varieties: 1948, 1949-S, 1953, and 1955 are significant years for collectors. Among the series' most prominent variations is the 1955 "Bugs Bunny" type, which is distinguished by the die clash marks that appear close to Franklin's mouth.
  • Size and Specifications: The coin has a reeded edge and contains 0.36169587 troy ounces of silver. Its dimensions are 30.6 mm (1.204724 inches) in diameter, 1.8 mm in thickness, and 12.50 grams in mass.

Because of its historical significance and silver content, the Franklin half dollar series, which was discontinued in 1963 to honor the late President John F. Kennedy with the Kennedy half dollar, continues to be a highly prized collector. John R. Sinnock etched the portrait of Benjamin Franklin on the obverse, which was inspired by Mint Director Nellie Tayloe Ross. The phrase "IN GOD WE TRUST," the mintage year, and the word "LIBERTY" are all printed on the obverse side. The back of the coin has the recognizable Liberty Bell with its characteristic crack along with a little eagle to meet the Mint Act of 1873's mandate that half dollars have an eagle. The reverse side is printed with the phrases "E Pluribus Unum," "HALF DOLLAR," and "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA."
