President Theodore Roosevelt was inspired by an exhibition of ancient Greek coins at the Smithsonian. He felt as though American coins lacked style and beauty compared to the Grecian coins. In 1907, President Roosevelt chose famous American sculptor Augustus Saint Gaudens for the job. Saint Gaudens would pass shortly thereafter finishing the design. • OBVERSE: Striding Liberty, The obverse gets its design directly from Saint Gauden's original sculpture of the General William T. Sherman monument in Central Park, New York City. It shows Lady Liberty walking while holding a torch and olive branch. The design would later be reused for the American Gold Eagle obverse as well.
• REVERSE: Soaring Eagle The reverse design features an American eagle flying above the sun and its rays.
