The Chinese Gold Panda coin is one of the oldest gold bullion options for modern investors. Introduced in 1982, the coins were originally available in 1 oz gold and three fractional weights. It would take just one year for the mint to expand the coins to feature a 1/20 oz Chinese Gold Panda.
Coin Highlights:
Chinese Gold Panda coins are issued by the Chinese Mint under the direction of the People’s Republic of China and the People’s Bank of China, the central bank of the nation. From 1983 to 2015, the 1/20 oz Chinese Gold Panda Coin was issued annually by the Chinese Mint with a weight measured and marked in Troy ounces. Starting in 2016, the Chinese Mint switched over to Grams as the measurement of weight for its coveted Gold Panda coins. The gold bullion coins in this series have a new panda design on the reverse side of the coins, which is also shared on the Silver Panda coins each year but is technically found on the obverse of those coins.
On the obverse of these 1/20 oz Chinese Gold Panda Coins you’ll notice a single structure from the Temple of Heaven complex. This complex is a series of imperial, religious buildings visited by emperors from both the Ming and Qing dynasties on an annual basis to pray to Heaven for a good harvest for the people.
The reverse of Chinese Gold Panda coins features the unofficial symbol of the nation. The Giant Panda is a species of bear that lives in the mountainous central highlands of China. Some 99% of the bear’s diet comes from the bamboo plant.
